Prof. Steven Weber Joins Breakwater Strategy as Managing Director

Weber brings decades of experience in consulting, research and academia as the firm continues to grow and expand its client offering

November 5, 2020 (Washington, D.C. and Berkeley, CA) Leading strategic communications and insights consultancy Breakwater Strategy announced today that Prof. Steven Weber has joined the firm as Managing Director. Weber brings over three decades of experience as a strategic advisor, researcher and academic with deep issue expertise across a range of fields including information technology, finance, health care and national security.

Commenting on the announcement, Breakwater Strategy CEO Arik Ben-Zvi said, “Breakwater Strategy was founded on the belief that in our era of profound uncertainty, clients need partners who can help them see around the corner and anticipate the far-reaching and fast-moving changes that can reshape their operating environment. Steve has spent decades preaching and practicing that discipline, pioneering the application of methodologies like scenario thinking that have helped organizations of all sizes prepare for and navigate these crucial challenges. We could not be more excited to have him on the team.”

As a member of the Breakwater Strategy team, Weber will work with the firm’s growing roster of clients as they seek to develop comprehensive strategies to manage risk and seize opportunities at the nexus of market strategy, media and social media conversations, regulatory debates, and public policy.

Commenting on the new role, Steve Weber said, “Strategy and communications have always been intricately interlinked in my work, and the pace of change in each drives policy at an accelerating rate. I’m extraordinarily lucky to have the chance to work with my Breakwater colleagues as we commit to building and deploying tools and methods that can match that velocity and move the needle for our clients.”

Trained as a physician and a political scientist at Stanford during the 1980s, Steve joined the Berkeley faculty in 1990 and is now Associate Dean and Professor at UC Berkeley’s School of Information. In 2015 he founded the Center for Long Term Cybersecurity at UC Berkeley which has a multi-disciplinary research program on emerging digital security issues at the intersection of new technologies, human behavior, and risk calculations made by firms and governments.

In addition to his academic work, Steve has worked as an independent strategic advisor to governments, businesses and other organizations, as well as through a number of leading consultancies including Global Business Network and The Monitor Group.

Steve is the author of several books on topics ranging from international relations to the future of technology including most recently  Bloc by Bloc:  How to Organize a Global Enterprise for the New Regional Order (2019) as well as The Success of Open Source, The End of Arrogance: America in the Global Competition of Ideas (with Bruce Jentleson) and Deviant Globalization: Black Market Economy in the 21st Century (with Jesse Goldhammer and Nils Gilman).
